Stringing Connections Participatory Strategy

Page history last edited by Kai Tian 13 years, 1 month ago

Final Project Strategy: Team TEAM

Working Title: Stringing Connections

Big idea: Visitors will be able to visually represent the connections they find between pieces in the gallery and build up connections made by previous visitors.

Summary: Visitors will have the opportunity to create and build upon previous connections on a large-scale collaborative map, located near the entry to the gallery.  Using continuous pieces of yarn, visitors will illustrate connections between the last piece selected and a piece of their choosing.  Explanatory tags will allow visitors to explain the connections, which subsequent visitors can add to or ignore.

Visitor Goals:

  • Visitors will make connections between pieces that they may not have considered otherwise.
  • Visitors will reflect on and then explain the relationship they see between the pieces.
  • In their explanations, 25% of visitors will reference previously made connections.
  • 50% of visitors will participate in the activity.
  • Each of the 3-5 available “pathways” will have at least 5 connections made.

Exhibition Components:

  •   Map
  •   Tags
  •   Strings
  •   Reminder and explanatory signage

The map forms the basis of the experience, providing a visual opportunity for reflection on the connections made.  The yarn allow for the concrete, visual expression of abstract connections.  The tags provide the opportunity to self-reflect and explain the rationale behind the connections and allowing subsequent visitors to understand and build upon previous connections.  The signage, placed throughout the gallery, will instruct visitors how to participate and remind them to look for connections while in the gallery.

Content assets:

  •       Installation shots
  •       Exhibition map
  •       Explanatory tags: prompting “What relationship do you see?”
  •       Yarn: 3-5 colors
  •       Large board
  •       Easel
  •       Intro panel: explain project and instructions

Look and feel board:

Word associations: Folksy, sewing, domestic, “Anthropologie”, knitting, textile arts, crafty, accessible

Interaction plan:

  • Visitors will encounter the map and explanation as they enter the gallery.
  • As they wander the gallery, they will see reminders that encourage them to look for connections and have opportunities to fill out their explanatory tags. Visitors can fill out multiple tags for the various connections they see in the gallery.
  • On their way out, they will be encouraged to add the connections they found to the board by physically moving the yarn, building upon the connections already made by previous visitors.  The visitor may pick up where the last connection was made or start a new spool of yarn, if still available. They will label the connection they see with their explanatory tag or add explanatory tags to already made connections.
